MIDWIFERY SERVICES

What is a Nurse-Midwife?

A nurse-midwife is someone who is a nurse with a Bachelor’s degree first, then obtains a graduate (Master’s) degree to become a midwife. We are licensed in all 50 states, and can prescribe medicines and order/ perform things like ultrasounds, labs and other tests.  Many nurse-midwives work in doctors offices similar to a nurse practitioner, but unlike nurse practitioners we also attend births independently.

A nurse-midwife can provide care for you throughout your life, not just during pregnancy. Midwives provide care for women from adolescence through menopause. This includes birth control, annual exams, pap smears; all types of problems including infections, bleeding irregularities, breast issues, depression, anxiety, trouble conceiving, pain, incontinence, and difficulty with sex (just to name a few). We also are educated and certified to provide newborn care for healthy children until they are 28 days old. We’re more likely to be able to suggest options that are more holistic, and that can help avoid more invasive things like surgery, but can also refer for surgical options if needed.

Nurse midwives are specially trained in normal pregnancy and birth. We know how to educate, counsel, and support women and their families through these processes to help prevent problems whenever possible, and can then intervene only when needed.

We are also experts in evidence-based care. We stay current on the latest research so we can offer all options that are available for you and your family.

Do you take insurance? What else do I need to pay for with a home birth?

I currently have contracts with Medicaid, Tricare and United Healthcare plans. If you have one of these plans, I can bill your insurance directly and the only thing you will owe me directly are any copays and deductibles. If you have other insurance, I can still bill your insurance, but my biller will need to check into how coverage will look with each individual plan, and there may be fees due up front. I also have very reasonable cash-pay rates for those that need or desire that option.

The only other costs with a home birth are a comprehensive natural-birth focused childbirth class, a doula, and a birth kit. I HIGHLY recommend a class (if you haven’t had one before, and if so, a refresher is sometimes recommended) AND a doula of your choosing. Just ask me at a visit for recommendations for both classes and doulas. My birth kit with all the supplies needed for your home birth is available here .

“When you destroy midwives, you also destroy a body of knowledge that is shared by women,

That can’t be put together by a bunch of surgeons or a bunch of male obstetricians,

Because physiologically, birth doesn’t happen the same way around surgeons,

Medically trained doctors, as it does around sympathetic women.”
